Plot summary
The Holt brothers, Jacey and Doug, live on the poorer side of Haley, Illinois, in the 1950s, raised by their working mother, Helen. Their father, Charlie, was a risk-taker who died driving over a frozen lake after a bet with Lloyd Abbott, who had taken over Charlie's patent for a steel file-drawer and grown rich on it. Lloyd and his wife, Joan, have three daughters, Alice, Eleanor and Pamela. Jacey holds Lloyd to blame for what the family lost and turns his attention to the Abbott girls to settle the score. Doug, who looks up to his brother, begins to feel something for Pamela, the youngest. Lloyd disapproves of that pairing, and so does Jacey.
