Plot summary
Pete and Ellie Wagner, a married couple, decide to look into adopting children from foster care and enroll in a preparation course. Their caseworkers, Karen and Sharon, explain the steps and say the aim is to keep families together. At a fair where adults meet children in care, the Wagners meet Lizzie, a teenager, and learn she has a younger brother, Juan, and a younger sister, Lita, who are to stay with her. The couple agree to take in all three.

- The film was inspired by director Sean Anders's own experience of fostering and then adopting three siblings, aged 6 years, 3 years and 18 months. He talked to other adoptive families and to teenagers who had grown up in care before being adopted to research the character of Lizzie.
