Plot summary
The story moves between two periods. Months before Chan Wing Yan's death, he works undercover in Hon Sam's triad, and Hon Sam, newly seated as the gang's boss, tests the loyalty of his men during a negotiation with the mainland gang leader Shen Cheng. The violence brings Chan before a court, and Superintendent Wong Chi Shing persuades the judge to send him to the therapist Lee Sum Yee instead of prison. Ten months after Chan's death, Lau Kin Ming, once Hon Sam's mole and now a senior inspector, is demoted while the deaths of Chan and Inspector B are investigated. Back in Internal Affairs, he works to keep his past covered, and his marriage to Mary is breaking. He turns his attention to Superintendent Yeung Kam Wing, and each begins trying to learn the other's secret.
