Plot summary
Aldolfo Rollo has written a 500-page screenplay and is looking for a producer. He is a self-conscious screenwriter, broke, and full of doubt. He also has unrequited feelings for his next door neighbor. He places an ad offering the screenplay to the highest bidder. Joe answers it, a fast-talking, high-rolling gangster who promises to produce the film and has his own ideas about how to finance it.

- Penniless as a first-time filmmaker in New York City, writer-director Alexandre Rockwell sold his saxophone to buy more film stock before making In the Soup.
- Rockwell loosely based In the Soup on an incident in which a man who answered one of his advertisements took a liking to him and generously offered to cover the cost of one of his movies.
- In the Soup was shot on color film, but Rockwell deliberately opted for a high-contrast black-and-white palette, influenced by 1930s stylized films and French directors François Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard, to give the images a surreal quality.
