Plot summary
Bohemy is serving a sentence at the Central Prison in Sofia in 1978 when he is offered a shorter term for assembling a work crew that doubles the output at the Kremikovtsi plant. He recruits Satura, a double murderer known as the Hatchet, the difficult Iglata, called the Needle, the elderly Daskala, the Teacher, and Krasy. Trouble starts when Satura finds a pigeon stuck inside his lathe and will not switch the machine on. Captain Vekilsky, who runs the plant, orders him to start it anyway. Satura refuses and seizes the rookie warden Kovachky, demanding the bird be freed first.
