Plot summary
1876. The Bulgarians have lived through five centuries of slavery, and now a fateful choice stands before them: either freedom or death. A small group of young revolutionaries comes together in Gyurgevo, on Romanian soil that is free, and draws up a plan aimed at the liberation of their enslaved country. Hristo Botev belongs to that group; he is a poet, a newspaperman and a teacher. He throws down his pen and puts himself at the head of two hundred young men who set off to bring aid to their rebel brothers in Bulgaria.
