Plot summary
Three separate episodes, each set in a different era and each centered on a woman whose name begins with M, as in the French word mal, meaning evil. In Renaissance Rome in 1520, Margherita Luti is ambitious and is the painter Raphael's mistress, sexually involved with celebrated painters and benefactors of the church. In France at the end of the nineteenth century, Marceline Caïn is the adolescent daughter of a bourgeois family and is full of desire. In present-day Paris, Marie, a clever woman married to a wealthy gallery owner, is seized on a busy street by a small-time crook who hides inside a cardboard box.
