Plot summary
Ulzii is a teenager who shares a yurt with his family on the edge of Ulaanbaatar. His father is dead and his mother drinks rather than work, and coal for the winter is often scarce. Ulzii looks after his three younger siblings and wants to earn money, selling his trainers and helping an older neighbor haul meat carcasses. He does well at school, and a teacher urges him to enter a physics competition where a strong result can bring a scholarship. When his mother leaves for the countryside with one of the children, Ulzii is left to care for his sister Tungaa and his brother Erkhemee. To keep them fed and warm he skips school to log the forest illegally, which puts his competition plans at risk.
