Plot summary

Lexie Winston is sixteen and lives in Waverly, Iowa, where she skates because she loves it. Her coach is Beulah Smith, a former regional champion who runs the town's bowling alley and rink, and who knows she can teach her pupil only so much. Lexie's widowed father, Marcus, has kept her out of competition, wary of the pressure it brings. He finally allows her to enter the Upper Great Lakes regionals, where Deborah Mackland, a coach at the top of the sport, offers to train her in Colorado Springs. Lexie's boyfriend, Nick Peterson, has hockey ambitions of his own, and a sports reporter, Brian Dockett, begins paying her attention.
