Plot summary
Jean and Eddie, her husband, are unable to have children of their own, and she has long accepted it. Then Eddie brings home a baby boy for her to raise. One night Jimmy, one of Eddie's partners, wakes Jean, hands her a bag of money and tells her to run; he puts her in the care of Cal, who says Eddie has gone missing and that many people are searching for him. Cal moves Jean and the baby, Harry, into an empty house outside the city and tells her to avoid meeting anyone. Lonely there, she goes against him and makes a friend of Evelyn, the widow next door.
