Plot summary
Mary Marshall has served three years of a six-year sentence for accidental manslaughter when she is given an eight-day Christmas furlough. She travels to Pinehill to spend the holiday with her relatives. On the train she meets Zachary Morgan, an army sergeant on ten days of leave from a military hospital, where he was treated for what was then called shell shock. His physical wounds have healed, but panic attacks still trouble him. Mary keeps her past to herself, and her stay with her family is brief, since she must return to prison when it ends. She settles in with her relatives, and Zach takes a room at the YMCA until he telephones her and she asks him to dinner.

- Producer David O. Selznick was unhappy with William Dieterle's direction of Shirley Temple in the scene where her character confesses to revealing Mary's prison record, so after principal photography finished he hired George Cukor to reshoot it.
- Joan Fontaine was first cast as the furloughed prisoner Mary Marshall but had to withdraw because of prior commitments, with some reports blaming ill health, and Ginger Rogers was cast in the part after she left.
- The film took its title from the song "I'll Be Seeing You", which had become a nostalgic hit in 1944 even though it dated back to 1938, and producer Dore Schary suggested using it.
- In a 1991 thesis on how World War II veterans were shown in American film and fiction, academic James I. Deutsch counted I'll Be Seeing You among the earliest films to portray returning soldiers' troubled psychological states.
