Plot summary
Shula is eight years old when her village accuses her of witchcraft. A short trial finds her guilty, and she is handed to the state and sent to a camp where accused witches live. The women there have white paint on their faces and a long ribbon fixed to each of them, wound on a big spool. Shula is told the rules of the place: if she cuts her ribbon she will be cursed and become a goat. She is tethered like the others and put to work.
