Plot summary
Ramkishan Chaturvedi, a wealthy businessman, lives with his wife Mamta and their four children. Vivek, his son from his first wife Lakshmi, is Mamta's stepson, and the two share a close family bond. As a boy, Vivek hurt his right arm saving Prem and Vinod, and it remains partly paralysed. Prem returns from studies in the United States, Sangeeta is married to Anand and they have a daughter, Radhika, and Vinod is preparing to join the family business. Sadhna, a business associate's daughter, is drawn to Vivek, and despite his hesitation about his arm, they marry. Prem and Preeti, in love since childhood, become engaged, and Vinod is secretly in love with Sapna, from the village of Rampur.

- During a 1998 Jodhpur film schedule, Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Neelam Kothari, Tabu and Sonali Bendre were involved in a case of shooting an endangered black buck; Salman Khan spent a week in Jodhpur jail in 2007 and was convicted by a Jodhpur court in 2018 while the others were acquitted.
- For Preeti's role, Sooraj Barjatya first approached Raveena Tandon, who refused the part because the film was a multi-starrer; Sonali Bendre was later cast as Dr. Preeti, in what was her only film opposite Salman Khan.
- Vivek's role was offered first to Anil Kapoor and then to Rishi Kapoor, both of whom refused, before Mohnish Bahl was cast as Vivek; Bahl kept his right hand in his pocket as the role of the partly paralysed arm required.
- Barjatya approached Madhuri Dixit for Sadhna's role, who declined, and Manisha Koirala refused it because she was filming Mann; Tabu was finally cast as Sadhna.
- Hum Saath-Saath Hain became the first Bollywood film to be played in Canadian theatres, with six screenings in Toronto, and Eros Entertainment released it on over 60 screens in North America, then the biggest opening for any film.
- Composer Raamlaxman plagiarised the melody of the song "A B C D" from the Spanish singer Jeanette's 1974 song "Porque te vas".
- Songs from the film, including "Sunoji Dulhan", "Mhare Hiwda" and "Maiyya Yashoda", became synonymous with the wedding, monsoon and festive seasons.
