Devdas (2002) on Netflix

Plot summary

In the early 1900s, the Mukherjee household prepares for the return of Devdas, who has spent ten years studying law in London. Their neighbor Sumitra has a daughter, Paro, Devdas's closest companion in childhood, who lit a lamp when he left and vowed to keep it burning until he came back. Once he is home, their old companionship turns into love, but his mother objects: she counts Paro's maternal line of nautch dancers beneath the family's zamindar standing, a bias Devdas's sister-in-law Kumud encourages. At a family celebration Sumitra proposes the match, and Devdas's mother refuses it and mocks her standing. Paro then meets Devdas secretly at his estate, where his father Narayan discovers them. Without the courage to defy his household, Devdas leaves for Calcutta and writes to Paro asking her to forget him.
