Plot summary
Eight years have passed. Rahul Khanna is raising his daughter Anjali alone after his wife Tina died, and each birthday the girl is allowed to read one of the letters her mother left behind. In those letters Tina tells the story of their college days: how she met Rahul, and how his best friend Anjali Sharma had loved him while he loved only Tina, and left college heartbroken. Tina's last wish, written in the letters, is that the two be reunited. On her eighth birthday Anjali reads the last letter, and she sets out to find Anjali Sharma, an instructor at a summer camp in Shimla who does not know who the girl's father is.

- While filming the song "Yeh Ladka Hai Deewana", Kajol lost control of her bicycle and fell, injuring her knee and briefly losing consciousness; she called it her most memorable moment of the shoot because she remembered nothing of it.
- Lyricist Javed Akhtar completed one song, "Koi Mil Gaya", but withdrew from Karan Johar's Kuch Kuch Hota Hai after calling its title "mediocre, obscene, and vulgar"; he later regretted the decision given the film's popularity.
- The role of Tina was written for Twinkle Khanna, who declined it, and Aishwarya Rai, Raveena Tandon, Tabu, Urmila Matondkar, Shilpa Shetty and Karisma Kapoor also turned it down before Aditya Chopra suggested Kajol's cousin Rani Mukerji, whom Karan Johar cast after Raja Ki Aayegi Baaraat.
- At the 44th Filmfare Awards, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai won 8 of its 18 nominations, taking all four top prizes — Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress — only the third film in Filmfare history to do so, after Guide (1965) and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995).
- Kuch Kuch Hota Hai became the first Bollywood film to cross the $5 million mark overseas, eventually grossing $6.3 million (₹26.61 crore) internationally.
- Aman Mehra was first offered to Saif Ali Khan and Chandrachur Singh, both of whom declined; Salman Khan accepted after meeting Karan Johar at his sister Alvira Khan Agnihotri's home, and initial concerns over his fee were eventually resolved.
- Karan Johar secretly recorded Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol rehearsing and improvising the scene where Rahul and Anjali reunite after eight years, and was so impressed that he used the rehearsal footage in the final film.
- In 2010 Time magazine put Kuch Kuch Hota Hai in its list of "Five Essential Bollywood Movies to Netflix", and the 2012 comedy Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi paid tribute with a musical number, "Ramba Mein Samba".
