Trailer

Plot summary

For twenty five years Narayan Shankar has been principal of Gurukul, an elite all-boys school built on tradition, honor and discipline. He forbids romance of any kind and expels students who fall in love. Three of them hide their feelings: Sameer loves his childhood friend Sanjana, who already has a boyfriend; Vicky pursues Ishika from the neighboring girls' school, who wants nothing to do with him; and Karan is drawn to Kiran, a widow he notices alone at a train station. Knowing that discovery means expulsion, they keep quiet. Raj Aryan arrives to teach music, befriends the boys, and urges them to follow their hearts, which puts him directly against the principal.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Mohabbatein (2000)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Amitabh Bachchan was cast in Mohabbatein during a period of financial failure, deep in debt and out of work; he walked to Aditya Chopra's house and asked to be given a film, and Chopra offered him a role on the spot — one that rebooted his career.
  • Aamir Khan was offered the role of Raj Aryan in Mohabbatein but turned it down, and Shah Rukh Khan then took the part without even reading the script.
  • Kajol was initially considered for the role of Megha in Mohabbatein but declined because of her recent marriage, and Aishwarya Rai was cast in her place.
  • Aditya Chopra wrote Mohabbatein before making his directorial debut, but judged the subject too mature for a first film, so he made Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge instead and kept Mohabbatein for his second film.
  • Production designer Sharmishta Roy created 13 to 14 distinct sets for Mohabbatein, among them Narayan Shankar's stone-heavy office, for which she sourced props from Lohar Chawl in Mumbai; she told Rediff.com the challenge was individualising each house to suit the script and characters.
  • For the newcomers in Mohabbatein, composers Jatin–Lalit used new voices rather than established singers; Lalit told Rediff.com the aim was a fresh tonal quality for the album, though matching the vocal textures to the actors was a challenge.
