Plot summary
Hula Calhoun lives on her father's pineapple plantation in Hawaii, where her uncle Edwin urges her toward a simple, natural life away from the family's social conventions. She rides horses and wears pants, and the household regards her as a wild child. Harry Dehan courts her devotedly, but Hula has set her heart on Anthony Haldane, a young British engineer who has arrived to oversee a dam being built on her father's land. Haldane is already married, and at a party he tries to keep his distance; Hula, who has had too much to drink, dances a seductive hula for him.
