Plot summary
Bombed-out streets left over from the war are the world Joe Kirby and his friends move through. Joe leads the Blood and Thunder Boys, a clique of teenagers who take a guilty pleasure in the illustrated adventure stories printed in boys' magazines. Joe comes to believe that those storylines are being copied by thieves who use them to plan real robberies. Inspector Ford of the C.I.D. hears him out and laughs. At work, Joe raises the matter with his boss, Mr. Nightingale, who advises him to forget it. Joe refuses. With another boy he visits Felix Wilkinson, the eccentric author of the stories, and sees that Wilkinson's wording is altered somewhere between his draft and the printed page. Their hunt for whoever makes those changes leads them to a woman employed at the stories' publishing house.
