Joan Dowling
Biography
Joan Dowling was a British character actress who, though never formally trained, began taking parts in small plays and pantomimes as a young girl. Born in 1928 and raised in Uxbridge, she approached a London acting agency at fourteen and soon landed her first proper part. Her major stage debut came in 1945 as Norma Bates in Joan Temple's No Room at the Inn, first staged at the Embassy Theatre before transferring to the Winter Garden Theatre, and she repeated the role in the 1948 film version. At seventeen she signed a film contract with Associated British Pictures. She was best known as the tomboy Clarry in the Ealing Studios production Hue and Cry (1947). Her other stage work included Puck in A Midsummer Night's Dream in 1950 and the Principal Boy in Robinson Crusoe in 1952, and she appeared in the radio series Meet the Huggetts in 1953. She died in 1954.
