Plot summary
Jenny Welch comes to the church looking for her friend Bernard Cutler, who has become a Catholic priest, but the man hearing confession is the elderly Father Xavier Meldrum. She tells him that her boyfriend Terry Wyatt pushed her into an abortion and then leaves. Meldrum, known to his parish as a counselor of troubled young people, holds to a private idea of divine justice and takes it upon himself to answer sin. That night he lets himself into Jenny's flat and beats her friend Robert, mistaking him for Terry; Robert is carried to a hospital. The next day Meldrum asks Jenny to his presbytery, where he lives with Miss Brabazon, his housekeeper, and his bed-bound mother. There Jenny learns he recorded her confession.

- Peter Cushing was offered the part of Father Xavier Meldrum, and at the time there were rumors that Cushing hated the script.
- Director Pete Walker only learned in 1983, while Peter Cushing was acting in Walker's final film House of the Long Shadows, that Cushing had actually liked the script and simply had other film commitments. Harry Andrews and Stewart Granger were also considered for the part.
