Plot summary
After his wife Abigail dies in childbirth in a New Orleans hospital in 2005, Nolan Hayes is left with a newborn daughter who cannot yet breathe on her own and must stay on a ventilator for two more days. As Hurricane Katrina closes in, the hospital is evacuated, but the ventilator cannot be moved, so Nolan remains with the baby, and a nurse promises to return with help. When floodwater in the basement cuts the power, he searches for a generator and finds one he has to crank by hand every three minutes, each charge leaving the battery with less life than the last.
