Plot summary
In northern Italy in 1944, SS troops under Major Taussig kill the whole population of the village of Reanoto for helping the resistance. Only a group of boys survives, led by Aldo, who saw the executions and wants revenge. The same night an American sabotage team jumps in to destroy a dam ahead of the Fifth Army's advance, but Wehrmacht troops under Hauptmann Friedrich von Hecht are waiting and kill them; their leader, Captain Turner, lands in a tree and goes unnoticed. The boys carry him off and seize a German doctor, Bianca Freedling, to nurse him. Aldo asks Turner to teach the boys weapons and tactics, and Turner, his command gone, takes up his mission again with them.
