Plot summary
In Paris in 1993, Selma lives with her mother and father in a Berber household that is bourgeois and secular. At college she meets Julien, a dashing young man, and her strong attraction to him makes her feel, for the first time, how heavily the rules of her patriarchal family weigh on her intimacy. In the country her family comes from, Islamism is taking hold, and the family itself is coming apart. Selma also begins to grasp the force of her own desire. She has to resist, and with the strength of her people behind her she starts to become a free woman.
