Plot summary
Chance, an American bulldog, narrates. He belongs to Jamie; Shadow, an old golden retriever, belongs to Peter, Jamie's brother; and Sassy, a Himalayan cat, belongs to their sister Hope. On the morning Laura, the three children's mother, marries Bob Seaver, Chance causes a stir by eating the wedding cake as the guests watch. Bob's job moves the household to San Francisco, so the animals are left with Kate, a friend of Laura's from college. Kate rides out on a cattle drive and asks her neighbor Frank to look after them, but he receives only half of her message and assumes she took the animals with her. Fearing they have been abandoned, Shadow refuses to believe his boy would leave him and sets out for home; Chance and Sassy follow.
