Plot summary
Gar Gartland is seventeen and lives in Riverton, Indiana, where the town follows the high school basketball team closely. Gar writes for his school paper and covers the Riverton Giants as they chase a state championship, and his best friend Matt is the Giants' star. Gar believes Matt can do no wrong, and he joins the parties and pep rallies that surround the team. Bridgette has just moved to town and does not treat the players as celebrities, and Gar falls for her. Matt's brother persuades Matt to steal money from the home of a small-time drug dealer, and Gar tags along.
