Plot summary
At Christmas, Alexandra Morgan summons her sisters to the family farmhouse. Frederica, Joanna and Christine come because their father, Benjamin Morgan, lies ill there and believes that Elizabeth, his second wife, is poisoning him. He calls the four of them into his room and asks them to kill their stepmother before she kills them. Frederica's screams from upstairs bring the sisters running; they find her drunk, a shard of glass cutting her hand, and put her to bed. A rainstorm breaks that night, and Joanna, tired of the reunion, asks to borrow Alexandra's car to reach the local train station.
