Plot summary
Russell Core studies wolf behavior, and Medora Slone brings him to Keelut, Alaska, to hunt the wolves she blames for the disappearance of three small children. One of them is her six-year-old son, Bailey. Core stays in her house and tells her that wolves do not act this way. Medora speaks of a darkness in the village and of hot springs north of town, the only warm place she has known. Her husband, Vernon, is away fighting in a war, she says, and told her he would never leave her.
