Plot summary

At The Bilberry Woods Hotel, where his parents once spent their honeymoon, the American novelist Ohm Bauman has come to scatter their ashes. He is there because he cannot finish the final book of his Conquistador trilogy, and because he glimpsed his mother's ghost at home. Cob owns the hotel; his son-in-law Mal works the front desk. Fergal is the groundskeeper, Fiona tends bar, Alby carries bags. Ohm hears Cob tell two children about the Cailleach, a witch who leads children in chains through the underworld. Though short with the staff, he warms to Fiona when she places the spot in a photograph his mother took, and he meets Jerry, a local who lives in a van. Fiona and Alby say the honeymoon suite is kept locked, said to hold a witch.
