Plot summary
Maria spends her early years with her mother Cynthia, who hoards and calls her saved belongings a catalogue of love, and who grows upset when Maria does not bring home the day's rubbish. When one of Cynthia's piles topples and hurts her, Maria, then eight, goes into foster care. Ten years later, in 1994, eighteen-year-old Maria is still living with Michelle, her foster mother. Michael, thirty, was once another of Michelle's charges, and he moves in for a time while he searches for a place to live with his girlfriend. Maria receives her mother's ashes, and Laraib, her friend from childhood, is sent away by her family. Maria and Michael grow close, and she revisits memories of her mother that she had put aside.
