Hitler, a Career (1977) on Netflix

Plot summary

Made entirely from archival footage, the documentary traces Adolf Hitler's rise to power in Germany and sets out to explain why people living there loved him. Its argument is that he was a calculating and adaptable politician, quick to seize on weaknesses in the political system and in the crowds themselves, who were humiliated by the outcome of the First World War. Those crowds wanted someone to speak for them. The film examines his mastery of imagery and of crowd psychology, drawing on clips from propaganda films of the period, and the skill with which he exploited the weaknesses of others.
