Plot summary
Bruce Vail, a ship owner, does not intend to let his wife Irene divorce him. Learning that proof of another man would block the divorce, he pays his driver, Michael, to let a private detective catch him in Irene's Paris hotel room. A stranger overhears Irene's startled cry, fights Michael and leaves him on the floor. When Bruce and the detective arrive, the stranger holds a gun on them, then takes Irene's jewelry and leads her away. He gives the jewels back. The stranger is Paul Dumond, a waiter at the Château Bleu, and he takes her there to dine and dance.

- The final ship-disaster sequence in History Is Made at Night was an unplanned addition to the story; shooting it pushed production past its scheduled December 31, 1936 finish to February 9, 1937, and required more than 500 extras.
