Plot summary
Masao Yabe's father, junior high school teacher Takashi Yabe, went to an ancient burial mound with his student Reiko Tsukishima and never came home. Masao searches the schoolhouse for him and sees Reiko there. His uncle, the archaeologist Reijiro Hieda, comes to town to investigate; Hieda's theories about the supernatural have already cost him his standing among colleagues. Students are found dead at the school, and Masao's back burns, smokes, and shows small blackened faces. Yabe's notes describe a goblin named Hiruko, sent to Earth ahead of the demons waiting behind a gate of hell, and Hieda sets out to learn the spells that open and shut the mound's chamber.
