Plot summary

The Katakuris move into a big old house near Mount Fuji, bought with Masao's redundancy pay, and open it as the White Lovers' Inn. The house stands on land that was once a garbage dump. Masao's wife Terue, his father Jinpei, his son Masayuki, his divorced daughter Shizue, her young child Yurie and the dog Pochi all settle there with him. They count on a road beside the house being widened, which would bring guests past their door, but the road work has not started and nobody books a room. The first guest to arrive kills himself in the night, and the family decides to bury the body in the backyard rather than report the death.
