Plot summary
Hirkani is a milk maid who lives in a village at the foot of the Raigad fort. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj captured the fort and made it his capital in 1674. Its gate opens in the morning for the villagers to sell their wares inside and closes every evening, not to open until the next day. Hirkani lines up at the main entrance each morning and sells milk to regular customers. One day her child delays her, and she reaches the gate after it has been shut for the night. Her infant son is alone at home.
