Plot summary
A Tibetan village in the Dolpa region of Nepal, five thousand meters up, depends on one journey each year. A caravan of yaks hauls rock salt down from the high plateau to the lowlands and trades it for the grain the villagers need through the winter. The chief's heir, Lhakpa, has died in a failed attempt to navigate a shortcut. The elders hold that Karma, a young herdsman, should lead the caravan in his absence, and Tinle, the aging chief, objects, insisting that someone else take the post. Karma sets out days ahead of the scheduled departure, and his relatives plead with him not to go, saying that leaving early will look deceitful. Tinle gathers the households that still hold salt and prepares a caravan of his own for the appointed day.
