Plot summary
Marv Grant is a high school senior whose brains earn him ridicule from classmates and a scholarship recommendation from his English teacher. At home he lives with an out-of-work, alcoholic father and holds a part-time job on the waterfront dock. When Vince Rumbo begins to rough him up after class, Vince's girlfriend Betty Alexander steps in, then agrees to go out with Marv that night. Betty asks him to write her final English paper, and she tells him she intends to marry a rich man. After overhearing Walt Mathews, his boss, arrange a heroin shipment and the million dollars in cash that will pay for it, Marv asks a former racketeer, Sam Tallman, to introduce him to a safecracker, Harry March.
