Plot summary
A young drifter caught taking food at the Davis ranch is nicknamed Cooncat by the cook, Boatwhistle, and the clan and its hired hands take him for a runaway with a crime behind him. He says he left an abusive father, then admits under rough handling that he killed Jim Shell, a trading post owner who had taken his money. Two drifters, Smiling Man and Roper, gave him the revolver and urged him on, he says, and he was knocked unconscious before the shots. The men ride to the trading post and find no body and a place that looks abandoned for months. Meagan Davis believes his account; rancher Pat Farrell, engaged to her sister Abby, wants him handed to the sheriff, and the Davis family keeps him at the ranch until the story can be checked.
