Plot summary
In 1919, a police operation in Arnhem Land punishes Aboriginal men for killing a cow, and a Yolngu community is massacred. Two people survive: the warrior Baywara and his young nephew Gutjuk. Travis, a veteran of World War I working as a policeman, rescues the boy, hands him to Claire at the East Alligator River Mission Outpost, and gives up his job. Twelve years pass. Gutjuk, now eighteen, is called Tommy at the mission. Policemen Moran and Eddy press a guilt-ridden Travis to hunt Baywara, whose mob has attacked white settlements. Travis takes Gutjuk with him to try to settle matters with Baywara, and Moran orders Eddy and Walter to follow them.
