Isabel Jeans
Biography
Isabel Jeans was an English actress who worked on stage and in films. Born in London, she originally hoped to sing but launched her stage career in London in 1908 at fifteen, after an invitation from Herbert Beerbohm Tree. She appeared on Broadway in A Midsummer Night's Dream and in London productions such as the musical Kissing Time and The Rat. During the late 1920s she took major roles in Alfred Hitchcock's silent films Downhill (1927) and Easy Virtue (1928), later becoming known for grande dame parts in Hollywood, among them Suspicion (1941) and Gigi (1958), in which she played Aunt Alicia. Her stage work continued through The Beggar's Opera in 1935 and Chekhov's The Seagull in 1949, and she appeared in West End productions of Oscar Wilde, including The Importance of Being Earnest as Lady Bracknell in 1968. She died in 1985.
