Plot summary
Jenny Miller works as a nurse in the neonatal intensive care unit of Community Memorial Hospital, where Alice Shelby has supervised the team for years. Before Christmas, Alice is forced into early retirement, and Jenny, who is organizing the staff Christmas party this time, decides to make it a surprise celebration for her. Her plan meets an obstacle in Matt Crawford, the hospital's new chief financial officer, brought in to cut costs where his predecessor would not. He has never worked in a hospital and treats the place as a business, and the budget he trims has long paid for the unit's Christmas party. Jenny takes a dislike to him the moment they meet.
