Plot summary
Late in 1944, during the Battle of the Bulge, U.S. Army intelligence officer Lieutenant Thomas Hart is captured by German forces. He is sent by train to Stalag VI-A, a prisoner of war camp at Hemer. There the ranking American officer, Colonel William McNamara, asks whether Hart cooperated with his captors, then bunks him with the enlisted men rather than the officers. Two Black pilots, the only African Americans in the camp, are assigned to Hart's barracks, where Staff Sgt. Vic W. Bedford makes their lives difficult. One pilot is executed over a weapon found in his bunk; when Bedford is found dead, the surviving pilot, Lieutenant Lincoln A. Scott, is charged. Hart, a law student before the war, is appointed to defend him at a court-martial the camp commandant permits.
