Plot summary
Helen, a schoolteacher divorced from Mike, signs up for a beginners' survivalist course on the Appalachian Trail. On her drive from Pittsburgh she stops to see Gigi, the grandmother who raised her and her brother Duncan. At the motel orientation she meets Beckett, the young guide, and the other hikers, including Hugh and her tentmate Windy. She is startled to find Jake, Duncan's best friend, among them, and asks that they keep their connection quiet. On the trail Beckett enforces the rules, and when Helen gashes her leg, Jake, a doctor serving as the group's EMT, dresses the wound. Windy takes an interest in Jake; Helen finds him immature.

- Ellie Kemper said she was drawn to the role of Helen because the character is a grump, a departure from the optimistic, funny, bright-eyed women she had played before.
