Plot summary
Thurgood works as a janitor at a medical laboratory and shares a place in New York City with Scarface, Brian and Kenny. Thurgood orders weed from Samson, a well-known local dealer, and the four smoke it. Kenny teaches kindergarten and is out buying snacks when he feeds junk food to a diabetic police horse named Buttercup, which kills it. He is jailed and held on a million dollars bail, and his friends must find a tenth of that before other prisoners exploit his gentle nature. On a visit to the prison, Thurgood becomes acquainted with Mary Jane, who is firmly anti-drug, so he hides his smoking from her. At the lab, a scientist asks him to fetch a pound of cannabis from storage and gives him free weed; Scarface suggests selling stolen medical marijuana to raise the money.

- Dave Chappelle and Jim Breuer shared a manager and had planned to work together on the short-lived sitcom Buddies; in mid-1996 both were working separately on marijuana-related film projects, and since Chappelle and Neal Brennan's script was complete, Breuer was asked to join theirs.
- A sequel produced by Griff Furst of Universal 1440 Entertainment brought back Rachel True in her role as Mary Jane and gave Harland Williams a cameo, and it completed filming in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in 2022.
