Plot summary
Gregory Underwood plays football for his school team, and the side is not doing well, so the coach runs a trial to look at new players. Dorothy turns up and, though the coach has doubts, she plays well enough to take Gregory's place as centre forward; Gregory moves into goal in place of his friend Andy. Gregory is glad she made the team, because he finds her very attractive, but other boys feel the same way and he has to compete for her attention. He confides in Steve, his best friend and the most mature of his circle, and asks Steve to help him win her attention. Steve cannot assist him. Acting on advice from his precocious ten-year-old sister Madeleine, Gregory awkwardly asks Dorothy out. She accepts.
