Plot summary
Lauren Frank is an assistant at Module 45, a shared workspace, and she has been with Tom Anderson, an unemployed urban planner, for five years, the two of them living together. Tom takes their relationship as settled. Lauren is privately unsure about her life and about him. Her parents, Carol and Matt Frank, tell her they are divorcing yet plan to stay in the same home as platonic roommates. She also gets a new boss, David Paolini, a man she was involved with five years ago, before Tom; he was married at the time and is twenty years her senior. David makes clear he wants to take up again where they stopped. Lauren rents a bachelor apartment of her own and asks Tom to marry her.
