Plot summary
The end of the war brings Hans Hoffmann no freedom. Convicted under Paragraph 175, which makes homosexual acts a crime, he goes from a concentration camp to a prison in 1945, where he meets Viktor Bix, serving twenty years for murder, who offers to tattoo over the number on Hans's forearm. In 1957 Hans is jailed again for living with his boyfriend Oskar, who is held in the same prison. In 1968 he returns once more, and among the inmates are Viktor, his old cellmate from 1945, and Leo, a young man imprisoned for cottaging whose troubles Hans steps into.
