Plot summary
A rare condition called macular pucker has distorted the sight in Spalding Gray's left eye. Gray is past fifty and has begun to think about his own death. The doctors lay out an operation to repair the eye and the dangers it could bring. Gray, a monologist, has religious objections to surgery and looks for another route. The choices he hears about include Christian Science, Native American sweat lodges, a raw-vegetable diet and a psychic surgeon in the Philippines billed as the Elvis Presley of psychic surgeons. Some of the treatments are communal, such as mass nude encounters in a sweatbox.
