Plot summary
John Hall is a widowed drifter who arrives in a small Maine town and takes a job at an old textile mill beside an abandoned graveyard. The foreman, Warwick, runs the mill and has hired an eccentric exterminator, Tucker Cleveland, to handle a rat infestation. Cleveland tells Hall the rats cannot all be killed and the mill should be shut down. When Warwick learns safety violations could close the mill, he assigns Hall and several coworkers, including Jane Wisconsky, to clean out the basement. Hall and Wisconsky begin a romantic relationship, and Hall refuses to be intimidated by Warwick's hostility. As the crew works, they find the mill's underground passages hold something far more dangerous than rodents.

- Stephen King optioned the film rights to Graveyard Shift for a relatively modest $2,500 to William J. Dunn, a location scout who had worked on Creepshow 2 and Pet Sematary and helped establish the Maine Film Office.
- The film was shot at Bartlettyarns Inc. in Harmony, Maine, the oldest woolen yarn mill in the United States, established in 1821. The historic mill was renamed "Bachman" for the movie, an homage to King's pseudonym Richard Bachman.
