Plot summary
Grandma Spankenheimer owns a general store in Cityville, the one property in town that Austin Bucks, its wealthiest resident, has not bought. He wants it, and she refuses to sell, telling him his simpler Christmas is not for the best. Cousin Mel wants the store sold all the same. In the family, only Jake and his grandparents believe in Santa Claus. On Christmas Eve the three of them watch Santa's reindeer dive down and knock Grandma over. By morning the police confirm she is missing, with an imprint of her left in the snow and her belongings beside it. Jake sets out to prove that Santa is real and to find his grandmother.

- Elmo Shropshire first pitched the TV special as an irreverent comedy in the vein of South Park or Family Guy, but producers hired rewrites to tone it down for a broader family audience.
- After a disagreement with a producer over merchandising royalties, Elmo Shropshire refused to let the special use his recordings, so Gary Chase, the music orchestrator, sang most of the songs Shropshire wrote, including the title song.
