Plot summary
In New York City, Nick Nikas sits through a court-ordered session with Peter, a psychiatrist who questions him about his cognitive impairment and a violent incident involving his grandmother. His brother Connie takes him out of the room, and the two rob a bank. A dye pack bursts in the money bag, the getaway driver crashes, and the brothers run, rinsing the dye out of their clothes in a restroom. A police officer grows suspicious of them; Nick panics, runs, and is arrested, while Connie gets away. Nick is sent to Rikers Island. That night Connie tries to arrange bail, but most of the stolen cash was destroyed, and his girlfriend Corey's attempt to pay the balance with her mother's credit card fails when the card is canceled.

- On set, actor and former felon Buddy Duress was under the influence of drugs and exposed his genitalia to a seventeen-year-old first-time actress playing a prostitute; the Safdies said they did not know her age and cut the scene from the film.
- To convince the film's skeptical financers he was right for Nick, Benny Safdie made an audition tape in character, put on weight and developed a way of speaking with his tongue held back.
- For Nick, the Safdie brothers first looked for an actor with a real disability but dropped the idea, fearing the action-heavy shoot would give him no agency; Benny Safdie took the role himself.
- During the shoot, director Josh Safdie was arrested when police thought he was dealing drugs out of a "super-shady car", which left him sick in a cold cell and shooting the next day on little sleep.
- The final scene was shot with the Epic Players, a nonprofit theater company for neurodivergent talent; the directors hid that Benny Safdie was an actor, so he stayed in character for 17 hours.
- Eric Roberts was cast as the bail bondsman, but after editing the scene the Safdies felt a known actor gave it an inappropriate artifice, so they re-shot it with Eric Paykert, a real-life bail bondsman.
- The Safdies had permission to shoot a scene in the New World Mall in Flushing, Queens, but showed up without warning and filmed it with mostly hidden cameras.
